Unlike most treatments of elliptic and parabolic equations, focuses on the qualitative properties of solutions rather than their existence and uniqueness. Discusses classical results for equations with smooth coefficients, such as the Schauder estimates and the solvability of the Dirichlet problem for elliptic equations in H÷lder spaces, the Wiener criterion for the regularity of a boundary point in the case of the Laplace equations, and the solvability of the Dirichlet problem for the heat equation by means of heat potentials; and also describes properties of solutions to second-order elliptic and parabolic equations with measurable coefficients near the boundary an at infinity. Translated from the 1971 Uravneniia vtorogo poriadka ellipticheskogo i parabolicheskogo tipov published by Hayka, Moscow. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
