Tao started the blog--web log--as an adjunct to his web site at the University of California-Los Angeles, and began writing articles on it that simulate how some mathematics students have traditionally learned informally from instructors outside of the classroom. The selection of articles from the first year include discussions of such topics as dyadic models, the crossing number inequality, and Einstein's derivation of E = mc2.
