The first edition was published in 1980 as volume 100 in the Studies in Logic series of North Holland, and Moschovakis says only parts have been substantially rewritten to incorporate new findings, but known errors have been corrected and the bibliography updated. He describes the main results and methods of descriptive set theory, and has selected only a few representative results so as to avoid swamping the central ideas with a long catalog of specialized data. Readers are assumed to have at least an undergraduate-level understanding of topology and analysis, and to have read Halmos' 1960 Theory or similar text. His topics include the basic classical notions, structure theory for pointclasses, the playful universe, the recursion theorem, and meta-mathematics.
