Sinossi

In 1963, Agmon taught a summer course at Rice University introducing the theory of higher-order elliptic boundary value problems, a shiny new theory at the time, having been developed only during the 1950s. The notes for his lectures were published in 1965 by Van Nostrand, Princeton, New Jersey. These four decades and a half later, he offers a new edition, with some explanatory remarks added, some inaccuracies and misprints corrected, some notation updated, and a list of references added. He explores some basic problems of the theory, such as the existence and regularity of solutions for the problems, and spectral properties of operators associated with them, such as Weyl's law on the asymptotic distribution of eigenvalues.
