They outline and critically review some new or particularly potent therapies, such as methotrexate, azathioprine, alkylating agents, and combination therapies; discusses some experimental therapies for rheumatoid arthritis, including cyclosporine and gamma interferon; discuss apheresis, total lymphoid irradiation, and other nonmedicinal immunomodulators in terms of their therapeutic use and what they reveal about the pathogenesis of the rheumatic diseases; review some general directions of current research, and the possible new approaches to diagnosis and treatment.
