He is the author or editor of more than thirty books, including A Civil War History of the New Mexico Volunteers and Militia (UNM Press). Thompson has won numerous awards from the New Mexico Historical Society, Arizona Historical Society, Texas State Historical Association, Texas Historical Commission, and the Army Historical Institute.
