This book is a view of rats and their habits and a further installment of his own autobiography. It is a gritty, eccentric, and oddly charming memoir of his lifelong obsession with ratting?yes, hunting rats?with dogs and ferrets. First published in 1978, the book blends practical know-how with vivid storytelling, all delivered in Plummer's unmistakably wry and self-deprecating tone. Raised in the industrial grit of Wales, Plummer found solace in the wild corners of rubbish tips and sewer beds, where he honed his craft. He treats the brown rat as Britain's "unheralded game-animal," and his passion for the sport is both unapologetic and oddly poetic. The book is part field guide, part social commentary, and part personal odyssey. Plummer shares tips on breeding and training terriers, the quirks of ferrets (jills over hobs, for agility), and the peculiar etiquette of ratting in less-than-glamorous locales. But beneath the muck and maggots, there's a deeper thread: a reflection on British class divides, outsider identity, and the strange nobility of a life lived on the margins. D. Brian Plummer, full name David Brian Plummer?was a British writer, teacher, dog breeder, and something of a countryside maverick. Born in Bridgend, Wales, in 1936, he led a colourful and unconventional life that included stints as a gamekeeper in Europe, a professional boxer in America, and a teacher in the UK. He's best known for his books on working dogs, hunting, and rural life, often blending gritty realism with eccentric humour. His most popular works include Tales of a Rat-Hunting Man, Rogues and Running Dogs, and The Complete Jack Russell Terrier. He also developed the Plummer Terrier, a breed named after him. Plummer's writing is steeped in the traditions of British field sports and self-sufficiency, often reflecting his deep connection to the countryside and its characters his books remain cult favourites among enthusiasts of rural lore and working dogs.
