Informazioni sull'autore
Karl Jenkins verfügt über große Erfahrung auf dem Gebiet der Musikerzeihung. Nach einer klassischen Ausbildung an der Universität Cardiff und der royal Academy of Music in London arbeitet er als Jazzmusiker, unter anderem mit Nucleus und Ronnie Scott. In den siebzigern Jahren war er Mitgleid der progressiven Band Soft Machine. Seine Alben „Adiemus – Songs of Sanctuary“, „Adiemus II – Cantata mundi“ und „Diamond Music (Palladio)“ waren weltweit außergewöhnlich erfolgreich.

Jenkins hat die üblichen Sätze aus der lateinischen Requiem-Messe eingerichtet, aber in dem von ihm bekannten Rückgriff auf andere Kulturen auch fünf japanische Todesgedichte, sog. 'Haikus', vertont. Diese Gedichte haben üblicherweise Szenen aus der Natur zum Inhalt, vermitteln nur einen einzigen Gedanken und bestehen aus siebzehn Silben, die sich im Silbenmuster 5-7-5 über drei Zeilen erstrecken. Wie man dem Text entnehmen kann, betrachten die Japaner den natürlichen Wasserkreislauf (Niederschlag) als Synonym des Lebens. Westliche und östliche Texte werden in den beiden Haiku-Sätzen 'Having Seen The Moon' und 'Farewell' miteinander verbunden, darunter das 'Benedictus' bzw. das 'Agnus Dei'. Beide werden von Männerstimmen wie Mönchsgesang intoniert, als Kontrapunkt zu dem von Frauen gesungenen japanischen Text. Die Besetzung dieser Haiku-Vertonungen umfasst u.a. die Shakuhachi, ein altes japanisches Blasinstrument. An anderer Stelle hat Jenkins wie üblich einige ethnische Trommeln (z.
