Full information where further reading and visiting is available. ## ## SCALES AND BALANCES: When a prehistoric man picked up his first stone, he would not appreciate that its weight was due to the effect of gravity on its mass. Soon, though, he would learn that large objects were sometimes lighter than smaller ones and would need an aid to help compare weights and values. Today, we accept weighing as part of everyday life, using its principles to measure our ideas of justice but giving methods of considering little thought. However, considering is an ancient art that has exercised the minds of philosophers, scientists, engineers and even the dishonest for at least six thousand years. This book shows how men strove to produce a machine that could compare more accurately, or more quickly, meet a special need, or perhaps even sell more cheaply. With the aid of many illustrations and non-technical language, some essential knowledge of weighing principles is provided. The late J. T. Graham had a considerable collection of old scales, weights, and measures, the subject of his first Shire Album. He was a senior officer in the weights and measures department of a large local authority and was editor of the Monthly Review for eight years, published by the Institute of Trading Standards Administration, of which institute he was a fellow and vice-president. For many years he lectured on consumer affairs and legal subjects and wrote many magazine articles and- several books.## ## Shire Books by Bloomsbury Publishing, a book publishing company based in London, England, and formerly by Shire Publications Ltd. and Osprey Publishing. Shire offers low-priced, concise non-fiction paperbacks on a wide range of subjects. Shire books cover antiques and collectables, motoring and rural history, archaeology and Egyptology, architecture, industrial history and many other topics.## ## They were founded in 1962 by John Rotheroe, the company based in Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire. The first book published by Shire Publications was Discovering East Suffolk, a 24-page guide to the county through a series of five motoring routes and a gazetteer of the main towns and villages. They were given away to visitors via coach operators, local churches and tourist information points. The book was successful, and Shire publishers decided to sell the second edition because free copies were being sold, setting the template for the future of Shire. Over the following years, Shire expanded its Discovering series and launched several new series, including Lifelines, Shire Albums, Shire Archaeology and Shire Egyptology. ## ## In 2008, Shire began a revamp of its list.
