Sophocles' Ajax is one of the most disturbing and powerful
surviving ancient tragedies. But it is also difficult to understand and
interpret. What are we to make of its protagonist's extremism? Does Ajax
deserve the isolation and divine punishment he experiences? Why is his
state of mind so difficult to determine? Dr Hesk offers answers to these
and many other questions by drawing together the very latest critical
work on the play and introducing the reader to key frames for its
interpretation, including Sophoclean heroism, language and form; Homeric
intertextuality and Athens' 'masculinist' culture, and the
twentieth-century reception of Ajax.

Originalbroschur. Condizione: Gut. LXIV, 311 S. Einband leicht berieben. - To the fifth-century Athenians Ajax was a great hero in three ways. First, his statue stood in their Agora as an eponymous hero of one of the ten tribes instituted by Cleisthenes. Secondly, he and his father, Telamon, had been specially invoked to help the Greeks before the victory at Salamis; and afterwards the Greeks dedicated a Phoenician trireme to him. Thirdly, he was one of the major heroes of the Iliad and the Epic Cycle, second only to Achilles as a champion of the Greeks. So his fame was securely established at Athens in tribal cults, military history and epic poetry. ISBN 0862920094 gr Gewicht in Gramm: 550. Codice articolo 1098062
