Original Paperback. Condizione: Gut. 98 p. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Binding lightly rubbed, bottom edge minimally stained, otherwise very good and clean. / Einband leicht berieben, Fußschnitt minimal beschmutzt, sonst sehr gut und sauber. - Vergil's metre is called the hexameter - a Greek name for a Greek metre. It is the metre of the earliest known poetry of Europe, the Iliad and the Odyssey of Homer. Because it is so early in its origins, we night have expected this metre to be quite simple. Far from it. The hexameter is a marvellous creation in its own right. Impressive in its sheer length (Just under 16 syllables on average in Greek, nearer 14 in Latin, yet the line maintains a strong sense of organic unity. Its secret lies in the play of variation on a fixed ground-plan of six stresses and a mid-line division. As line follows line, we are presented with ever-shifting versions of the same basic identity. Moreover, the metre interacts with the natural phrasing of the sense as an integral part of reading. Such a metre cannot be picked up casually; it has to be carefully learned. The aim of this booklet is to offer, first, an understanding of the hexameter, and then a practical method for learning to read the poetry fluently, with a clear and ready sense both of rhythm and of the interplay between the metre and the meaning through the phrasing of the text. And here let us be clear about one thing: to read Vergil authentically is to read him aloud. This is not a question of the original 'oral', or unwritten, character of Greek hexameter verse. It is simply that ancient poets, Roman as well as Greek, never composed primarily for the page and for the eye, though they did use writing as an aide-memoire - perhaps even Homer, whoever he was or whoever they were. Poetry belonged first and foremost to the voice and to the ear, and to read it was to read it, and to hear it read, aloud. ISBN 9780862921736 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 180.
