About the book >.>.> St. Paul's Cathedral crowned Wren's career as an architect, but the process of conception, design and approval was by no means an easy one. Wren used drawings, as his son tells us, 'for discourse sake', but also as a tool to explore different possibilities, and to refine rigorously the smallest details: indeed the whole plan of the cathedral was redrawn not once but twice between the Warrent design and the final building. Between the preliminary intention of repairing the pre-Fire cathedral and the finished building there were a number of different stages, here unravelled by Professor Downes, who organised the major Wren exhibition in London five years ago. His account is based on the collection of over 200 drawings for the cathedral now deposited in the Guildhall Library by the Dean and Chapter of the Cathedral. These illustrate in detail the evolution of the design, making 'the line of contact between on the one hand an imagination without limits and on the other a range of statical options that was constantly na.
