The Southwest US state of New Mexico includes mountains, deserts, canyons, dunes, forest, and grasslands, says Brandes. Most of the 60 geological sites she describes are accessible by passenger car on paved roads, she notes, but a few require driving on gravel or dirt. She arranges the sites geographically in sections on the Colorado Plateau, Southern Rocky Mountains, Rio Grande Rift, Mogollon-Datil Volcanic field and basin and range, and the High Plains.
