Stage has been compared to Damon Runton in style and choice of topics, although he feels a closer literary connection to P.J. O'Rourke and S. J. Perelman.

While working as a VD epidemiologist with the Center for Disease Control, assigned to the St Louis City Health Department, Wm. Stage began to contribute features and columns to local newspapers. Eventually he left the public health business but continued as a journalist. His man-on-the-street column, Street Talk, which ran in The Riverfront Times from 1982 to 2005, was arguably the most widely-read column in St. Louis. Stage has taught photo-journalism at St. Louis University and is the author of five non-fiction works.
