9780974895246: Lectures in Japanese about Significant Events in the History of Chemistry

Sinossi

For advanced students of Japanese, these lively lectures aid aural comprehension of scientific terminology, promote an understanding of chemistry as a human intellectual activity, and place some chemical discoveries in the context of world history.
This book and its three DVDs include video lectures in Japanese by Tokyo University professor emeritus Yoshito Takeuchi and a text that comprises precise transcriptions of those lectures, accompanied by vocabulary aids. Takeuchi’s engaging kemi-sutorii, “chemical stories,” originated with a request from the Japanese television network NHK to enliven its weekly broadcast of high school chemistry lectures.

Dalla quarta di copertina

For advanced students of Japanese, these lively lectures aid aural comprehension of scientific terminology, promote an understanding of chemistry as a human intellectual activity, and place chemical discoveries in the context of world history. This book with CD-ROM includes video lectures in Japanese by Tokyo University professor emeritus Takeuchi Yoshito and precise transcriptions of those lectures, accompanied by vocabulary aids. Takeuchi engages his audience with kemisutoorii, “chemical stories” that he created for broadcasts of thirty-minute programs for high school chemistry classes on the Japanese network NHK.
In his final story he shared what he had intended to accomplish with these stories and what he hoped would be the future of chemistry in their lives:
"Well, for the past year you have listened to this chemical story corner. It took considerable time as I sought diligently to bring you to at least some familiarity with chemistry. In each story, while tracing the development of chemistry, I also sought to show that chemistry is a part of the intellectual activity of humanity, that in that regard chemistry is essentially equal to music, the arts and literature. I also intended to point out that the development of chemistry is not unrelated to the development of society; thus, to study the development of chemistry is also to study the history of the world.
"I expect that most of you will not specialize in chemistry, but I don't consider that to be a sufficient reason for you to be content to say goodbye to chemistry. I hope you will maintain interest in chemistry throughout your lives. You may not be in music or in literature, but you will always maintain your interest in both. So though you may well bid farewell to chemistry as knowledge, I want you always to maintain interest in the nature of chemistry as an intellectual activity. That at least is my hope."
In order to ensure that students will attain these goals, a full transcription of each story is provided in the book manuscript. The lecture is available for study prior to viewing and listening to the story. In addition, vocabulary notes are provided for words in the story that students may not know. Since the goal is to enrich students’ knowledge of Japanese, Japanese definitions from the most authoritative Japanese dictionary, Iwanami's Koojien, rather than English meanings are given.
English is restricted to two roles: information about Western chemists who are cited in the story—their names, life spans, and a brief description of their historical contributions; and English technical terms that bear a one-to-one correspondence to the Japanese technical terms in the story.
