***UPDATE AS OF MARCH 2010*** Dr. Richards has uncovered possible evidence that A Method of Prayer was not written by Johannes Kelpius. A Method of Prayer remains a beautiful and inspiring work, and the background information on the content and publishing history in Dr. Richards' book remain accurate. However, the portions involving Kelpius as the author may no longer have relevance. The evidence is still inconclusive as Dr. Richards continues to pursue this fascinating research. His book includes the text of the German pamphlet that was printed in 1756, a glossary, background essays, and the only translation into modern English.

Dr. Richards earned his Master of Divinity at Princeton Theological Seminary, and his Ph.D. in German Language and Literature at the University of Virginia. In 2007, he was awarded a fellowship from the German Historical Institute to study German Pietism in colonial Pennsylvania.
Foreword:
On June 7, 1756, James Pemberton and five other Quakers resigned their offices as members of the provincial assembly of Pennsylvania. A few months before that, the French and Indian War had officially begun. As pacifists, these concerned Quakers could not remain in a government at war.
Non-pacifist Quakers remained in the assembly, but, as Peter Brock writes: "The resignations of 7 June symbolized the end of Quaker rule in Pennsylvania" (147).
That same year, an intriguing German pamphlet about mystical prayer was printed in Germantown, Pennsylvania...
...this new translation and edition of A Method of Prayer will take the understanding of the text to a new level...
...This little gem is part of the history of America. We may or may not be able to understand all of it, or agree with all that we do understand. But like the group of Kelpius's companions on the Ridge itself, this work is a red garnet embedded in silvery Wissahickon schist. The sun can shine inside this gem and gleam like fire.
...Here is a sample paragraph from the translation of A Method of Prayer:
"This prayer of faith is simple, pure, universal, and obscure; and we do not clearly perceive and distinguish emotions, words, or what we are asking for. And just as due to its vast extent nothing limits it, so also nothing interrupts or ends it."
