'Untouched reveals the spoils of a three-decade career photographing celebrities before they had their (air)brush with fame. 'It was a different time to now, honey, says Rozsa from his New York studio. 'Everything on view nowadays is sanitised and plasticised. This generation depends on erasing its wrinkles and bags with a computer or a knife' --The Daily Telegraph
'In Untouched, Rozsa (who's been photographing pop culture luminaries since 1975) shows very private and intimate sides of some the world's most public personalities . . . Mission accomplished Johnny' --Elle Magazine
'In his thirty years as a photographer, Johnny Rozsa has captured some of the most famous people in the world, but you ll hardly recognise them in his latest book. Laid out like the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Rozsa presents Halle Berry when she had real curves, Christian Slater when he had blonde highlights, The Jackson Five when they looked nothing like they do now' --i-D Magazine
Johnny Rozsa is a New York-based photographer, specialising in fashion, portrait, and celebrity photography. Rozsa was born and raised in Nairobi, the son of Jewish Hungarian-Czech parents. In the early 1960s he moved to England, where he attended Repton, graduating in 1964. Rozsa studied architecture, painting, and communications at Manchester University and communications at Polytechnic of Central London. Afterwards, he interned at Vogue under Grace Coddington. He later ran a vintage shop called Nostalgia in Covent Garden, where he met fashion editors, models, actors, and photographers on a daily basis. In the mid-1970s Rozsa began his photography career, working in Nairobi, Geneva, England, and the U.S. By 1978, he had a series of four full-page celebrity portraits in Ritz, with accompanying interviews. His photographs have appeared in numerous publications, including Vogue, The Sunday Times, i-D, Maxim, The Face, The New York Times, Newsweek, New York Magazine, and People. His portraits of Ian Charleson, Sade, Marilyn Monroe, and Martin Degville are part of the permanent collection at the National Portrait Gallery in London. His photographs of Leigh Bowery have been exhibited in several museums, including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney, the Kunsthalle in Vienna, and the Kunstverein in Hanover. Rozsa has also exhibited at the Venice Biennale. Rozsa was introduced to Buddhism by Tina Turner in 1982, and has been a Nichiren Buddhist for over 25 years.
