Donald E. Rodman is a highly successful Ford dealer in Foxboro, Massachusetts, but he has been just as accomplished in his second vocation—“giving back.” Don has dozens of charitable affiliations—too numerous to list here—and serves on the boards of many, including Catholic Charities of Boston and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester. Don is especially drawn to organizations, like his own Rodman for Kids, that not only provide children with their most basic needs, but surpass them, by including experiences one might want for their own child—like going to Disney World or a live Broadway in Boston show. While Don did not finish high school, he has four honorary doctoral degrees from area colleges and was knighted by Pope John Paul II, for his charitable deeds. His late wife, Marilyn Rodman, was also a philanthropist and a bright light in Don’s large, loving family of five sons, nine grandchildren and three great grandsons.
Rodman’s Ride and Other Stories of Giving chronicles the life of Massachusetts Ford dealer Don Rodman and his journey from a hand-to-mouth existence as a boy in Dorchester to his life as a leader of philanthropy. Part memoir, part “how-to,” Rodman’s Ride reveals how Don became an “agent of change” and developed a charitable entity that maximizes the reach and impact of giving. This title also includes the accounts and stories of giving of many in Don’s circle—colleagues and friends like Jack Connors, Bobby Orr, Karen Kaplan and Larry Bird—as well as tips for aspiring philanthropists.Don published Rodman’s Ride because over the last 40 years he has realized that giving is a culture that must start at a young age, and he hopes that this book will inspire young people to become philanthropic. As Cardinal Seán Patrick O’Malley, Archbishop of Boston, so graciously penned in his foreword, these pages “invite us to consider an important question: Will we take that leap of faith and accept the call to embrace the generosity of spirit that others have shown us? It is my hope that in reading this book, you will find the courage to know the answer.” 100% of the proceeds from this book support the Marilyn Rodman Theatre for Kids program.
