When, in 1988, Roy Lisker learned that the famous mathematician Alexandre Grothendieck (AG) had refused a very prestigious prize for his work, Roy convinced an influential French magazine to hire him to search for AG and uncover his whereabouts and interview him. AG had left the world of mathematics and was living somewhere in France as a hermit. This book is a hilarious account of Roy's attempt to find AG's address and his stay at AG's place. Along the way he meets up with some odd and unforgettable characters. The second part is a partial translation of AG's controversial memoir. It is must reading for mathematicians, philosophers and historians of mathematics and the scientifically-minded reader who will enjoy reading this part to "see" into the mind of one of 20th century's (perhaps of all time) greatest mathematicians.
