Words and travel loomed large in Roderic’s lineage; including poet, Alfred Lord Tennyson; explorer, Sir John Franklin; founder of the National Trust Canon Rawnsley and Roddy Owen, soldier, Grand National winner and man about town. His father was a big game hunter before losing out in the 1920s financial crash and departing the family home with the nanny. After Eton, Balliol College, Oxford and RAF service, Roderic eschewed suggested careers in the diplomatic service or with the BBC to pursue his dream of travel and writing. This saw him beachcombing the South Seas; becoming Court Poet to the Ruler of Abu Dhabi; trekking in Pakistan; driving through Africa and touring Mexico. After these independent travels, he continued to travel mainly with tour groups. These included visits to Asia and the Holy Land; following his ancestor’s route into arctic Canada; the temples of Tibet and cruising through Russia. He also returned to the Arabian Gulf and South Seas, where he ventured further to Easter Island. When no longer able to travel, he relived his adventures through writing in greater detail about them, the people he had met and travelled with along with brief historical detail and his general impressions.
