The Scriber Lake High School Writing Program in Edmonds, Washington uses writing as a powerful vehicle for change. The courage demonstrated by these students in their willingness to share experiences with homelessness, abuse, addiction and mental illness—matched by the outstanding writing in this collection—allows readers to enter perspectives crucial for understanding today’s youth. By choosing to express their way toward healing and hope, they are giving others both permission and inspiration to join them.

Marjie Bowker has taught English and a little history somewhere in the world for the past 19 years: in China, Norway and Vietnam, in addition to her "regular" spot at Scriber. She is co-founder of The Scriber Lake Writing Program and is the author of Creating a Success Culture: Transforming Our Schools One Question at a Time and two curriculum guides: They Absolutely Want to Write: Teaching the Heart and Soul of Narrative Writing and Hippie Boy Teaching Guide: Transforming Lives through Personal Storytelling.
David Zwaschka has taught English over the last 25 years in Alaska, Tennessee, North Carolina and Washington, with moments of administration in between. His two years at Scriber have been a revelation; he has so enjoyed his work with this school's terrific students and dedicated staff . Dave enjoys running, reading, hiking in the North Cascades and not having any pets. He and his wife, Claire, have two daughters.
