Sinossi

In this book, the Author presents in a comprehensive, step-by-step, and logical layout, an understanding of chord structures and their use in progressions. The book contains 10 chapters, 36,000 words, 44 charts and diagrams, 9 musical compositions, an index of covered topics, and exercises at the end of Chapters to reinforce the subject matter. This book is particularly useful for beginners and intermediate players, those who play by ear or note, and those who have a curiosity about how music chords are structured and used in progressions. As such the book can serve as a self-instruction guide, can be used as a text in classroom settings, and is a must for composers. While various chord structures and progressions are presented as examples, the book is not an encyclopedia of chords although methods are presented for forming any chord possible in any major or minor key. The understandings presented can enhance one's ability to play significantly. One does not need to read music to benefit from this discourse. A brief review of rudimentary musical notation is presented since the understanding of chord structures is greatly aided by such framework. These two Chapters include development of Treble and Bass Clefs, Key Signatures, and major, minor, and chromatic scales. The discourse covers major and minor triads, augment and diminish, and shows how build-ups to seven note chord structures are developed. Presented are major and minor chords to include flatted fifths, sixths, sevenths, major sevenths, ninths, elevenths, and thirteenths. The discussion on progressions includes three and four chord songs, circle of fifths, and an example wherein 21 distinctly different chords are used in a song the Author has written. Also, the book defines chord variations, chord identities, and chord substitutions and how these are used in progressions. Examples of passing chords and tags are also provided.

L'autore

The Author grew up on a farm in southern Pennsylvania and obtained a guitar at the age of 10 years. While there wasn't a guitar teacher within miles, he studied chords from a booklet that came with the guitar and learned to play songs by ear. A couple of years later, he took up trombone and was introduced to musical notation. His other musical activities included singing tenor with the High School Choir and baritone in a trio made up of his teen-age friends. He has also sung with various choral groups. In his young adult life, he studied Physics, having earned BA, MS, and PhD degrees. But Dr. Grace has always kept a passion for the sound of chords, their movements within progressions, and continued playing guitar. Today Dr. Grace brings a unique perspective to the writing this book based on a logical, step-by-step layout and the structure of musical notation on the one hand, and a hearing experience as he learned to play chords by ear in his early years. Thus, he offers this book to those coming to music from various backgrounds and uses unsophisticated language so that the presentation can be understood by all readers. At present, Dr. Grace enjoys writing songs, working out chord structures and progressions for popular music, and sings baritone with the East Valley Barbershop Harmonizers of Mesa, Arizona.
