With 34 illustrations by Hugh Thomson. "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife." So starts the novel, written during the stratified Regency era. Mr. Bennet has five daughters, but his estate is entailed, so none of them can inherit it. One of them must marry up in order to support the others. This leads to a comedy of many errors as the girls court wealthy men. Some would be happy to marry them, but can the girls even stand them? How can they get the charming ones interested in them? Ignorant choices are indeed made. Newcomers Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy enter the picture. Might they be perfect for Jane and Elizabeth? But first impressions do make a difference.

Jane Austen (1775–1817) is often considered to be the UK’s most beloved author. Her family lived at the fringes of English gentry. Her father was descended from a wealthy merchant family, but wealth passed him by due to inheritances only going to the eldest son. Her mother was from the Leigh family and was descended from knights and nobles, but was not noble herself. This may have helped her in pitting gentry and common people in her writings. Starting at about age ten, she wrote numerous and humorous stories and novellas that often mocked and parodied historical figures and literary works. Her mature novels, Pride and Prejudice included, are also full of biting irony, realism, and above all, outstanding and humorous wit.
