Not illustrated.1851 Excerpt: ... withdrawn from the Condesa's presence, than, desirous above all things to commune with his own thoughts, recollections, and conjectures, he sought the welcome solitude of the spacious gardens of the palace, there to meditate upon the fittest means of redeeming the chivalrous pledge which he had so fervently and so confidently given. And, in truth, it was no light task which he had undertaken, thus to encounter and to foil the redoubted Maldonado; thus to stand full across his path, as he was pursuing, not some trivial object of his restless caprice and desire, but the long-cherished consummation of one of his most daring and most deeply matured designs. How was he to encompass that subtle and experienced traitor? how was he to surprise, or extort from him some indication respecting that fatal letter, upon the recovery of which all the Condesa's future happiness, and not hers only, now depended? The more our hero considered this important matter, the more he felt convinced, that, though he had been for more than a year on terms of the greatest intimacy and apparent confidence with Don Diego, he had obtained, as yet, no insight whatsoever into what it most concerned him at present to know. Often as Maldonado had conversed with him in general terms upon his expectations, his views, and his hopes; often as he had manifested or betrayed the most unequivocal tokens of his soaring and ruthless ambition, he had sedulously avoided imparting to his younger colleague and associate any information respecting his family, or his more private friendships and acquaintances.
