Excerpt: ...is usually enclosed by brackets, thus:--" The naval discipline of the Americans is the sharpest; then that of the English; then that of the French (I speak as it used to be); and on board a Spanish ship there is no discipline at all." (Coleridge, Table Talk.) " If the king and queen of France, and their children, were to fall into our hands by the chance of war, in the most acrimonious of all hostilities (I deprecate snch an event, I deprecate such hostility) they would be treated with another sort of triumphal entry into London." (Burke, Fr. Rev. p. 127.) Or it may be marked off by a dash on each side--" Asleep or awake--he was unable to say which--Becket conceived that he saw the archbishop going towards the altar in his robes, as if to say mass." (Froude, in Nineteenth Century.) The use of brackets perhaps indicates a more complete detachment of the included words than the use of the dash. No positive rule can however be laid down; some writers preferring to use the dash where others would use brackets. In the above example from Froude, for instance, brackets might with perfect propriety have been used. § 109. The legitimate use of the dash, however, seems to be to indicate a kind of suspension of mind--carrying the thought forward on the same level--and it would conduce to clearness if it were used only in such cases. This effect is seen in such instances as the following:--" To act upon this rule,--to give, for example, an appointment to the man who was fourth rather than to the man who was eighth,--is, I am sure, a folly."
