Excerpt: ... FENCES. The poaching of the land by cattle in wet weather, is very injurious: every foot mark becomes a pool for retaining' water, and the nourishment is thus soaked out of the soil. To prevent this, the fences should all be kept in good repair. There is no more certain indication of industry and good management in a farm, than having the fences in good repair, and the gaps neatly closed; whilst their being only half mended, or stopped up with a plough or a harrow, or other make-shift, is a sure indication of bad and slovenly management. How many fields are there in this country, without a proper way of getting into, or out of them? Is it not shameful to see whole farms without a single field-gate? Gaps thrown down, and built up a dozen times in the year; or stopped with a cart, or a plough, or a harrow, and all to save a few shillings for a gate, which ought to be provided for every field. Except in very bleak and barren situations, hawthorn hedges form the best kind of fence: care is, however, required, both in planting and trimming them. The thorn is a hardy plant, and if cleaned and properly trained when young, and regularly cut when matured, it forms a beautiful hedge, and is better adapted for the purpose than any other plant. But in high exposed situations, having cold moorish soils, or on hilly land composed of pulverised granite, thorn hedges are seldom found to thrive. In such situations, the beech has proved superior to every other plant, either as an assistant or a substitute for the thorn. They retain possession of the soil, and continue to thrive, when thorns decay or die out; and when regularly and judiciously cropped, the beech forms a compact fence, which few animals will attempt to break through.
