CHAPTER XXXII WHEN CBEWE GOT BUSY Crewe was in his favorite attitude behind the bar unusually early that evening--and those among his regular customers who regarded the blemish on his face as a sort of barometer of his feelings (as many did, entirely without reason) sensed something portentous to the atmosphere. Birge Moreau had disappeared from his studio as soon as possible after the departure of his guests, and it did not take him long to change himself into the saloon-keeper and to leave the studio building by the rear entrance. It was to be a night, he thought, when Crew should get very busy indeed--when Moreau need not be in evidence. No report had come from the Green Car which had pursued the madhouse cab from in front of the office building, but a telephone message from Baldy did arrive just before Crewe got there, and Christy delivered it to him. "Baldy and Hawkins had a blow-out, and lost the cab because of it," he said. "Baldy says they chased it across Queensboro Bridge and all over Long Island, and that it doubled and twisted and headed for every point of the compass, picking out the worst roads that could be found, and didn't seem to be making for any place at all. He and Hawkins made up their minds that it was just killing time--although they couldn't guess why, no more'n they could tell why the guy inside of it didn't make a peep, or try to get out--unless he was doped or dead. And Baldy's dead certain that there wasn't anybody inside of the cab when Wilberforce got into it. Anyhow, the blowout" "Made them lose it," Crewe interjected.
