No report had come from the Green Car which had pursued the madhouse cab from in front of the office building, but a telephone message from Baldy did arrive just before Crewe got there, and Christy delivered it to him. "Baldy and Hawkins had a blow-out, and lost the cab because of it," he said. "Baldy says they chased it across Queensboro Bridge and all over Long Island, and that it doubled and twisted and headed for every point of the compass, picking out the worst roads that could be found, and didn't seem to be making for any place at all. He and Hawkins made up their minds that it was just killing time--although they couldn't guess why, no more'n they could tell why the guy inside of it didn't make a peep, or try to get out--unless he was doped or dead.
