Yes, law and order must be maintained to main-? tain any government, no matter how corrupt, or how unchristian it may be; unchristian, though it may be seemingly harmonious on the surface--the harmony of error--professing one thing, being in fact another. In a democratic government, men and women accused of violating "law and order" are vouchsafed the right of making a defense in the presence of the people, but in a despotic government, with a self-constituted despot retaining power by force, no right or privilege is accorded to the one charged with infraction; but the man or the woman falling a prey to the displeasure or animus of the despot is secretly assassinated by mental poison, which must precede the use of the knife, and it is just as much the work of...
