During the time I have attended your ministry, I have heard you clearly and strongly preach the doctrine of Universal Redemption; hut not more clearly and strongly than it appears to me to be set forth in the holy scriptures, in those texts which affirm that Christ "died for all;" that "he is the propitiation for the sins of the whole world;" and many others equally explicit. Yet this passage speaks in such terms of the predestination of some, that I am unable to reconcile it with universal redemption; and it greatly perplexes me. Then the thought is continually presenting itself that, if I am one of those who are predestinated to salvation, I shall certainly be saved; and if I am not so predestinated, I shall infallibly be lost. Now I am most anxious to know whether I am predestinated to eternal life, or not. M.--I am not surprised that the passage should present difficulties to your mind. Many persons, who have devoted their attention to the investigation of revealed truth a much longer time than you, have been equally embarrassed by this portion of scripture. But I am persuaded that much of the difficulty connected with it arises from a misapprehension of its meaning; and that it admits of an explication which-is at once simple and satisfactory. Miss H.--I am delighted to hear you say so, and wait with anxiety to know your views of it. M.--You have yourself suggested one very weighty reason why the construction ordinarily put upon these words cannot be the true one,--that it involves a contradiction of other parts of the word of God, the import of which is sufficiently plain and unmistakable.
