When was the Septuagint version made, and what was the origin of its name? It was made in the reign of Ptolemy Philadelphia, B. C. 270. The origin of its name is by no means certain8. Is it sanctioned by the New Testament? Most of the quotations are from it, except in St. Matthew's Gospel. Is there any other remarkable version of the Old Testament, in whole or in part, from which we may draw similar conclusions? There is the Samaritan Pentateuch, and there are also Paraphrases, which are very ancient, and are almost translations of our Hebrew Bibles. How does the Samaritan Pentateuch confirm the faithfulness of the Hebrew Scriptures? There is perfect agreement between the two Pentateuchs, except in a few manifest interpolations; and the manner in which these were immediately noticed by the Jewish writers shews the jealousy with which they watched their sacred books. 8 See Tomline's Theol. vol. i. p. 13,14. What reason have we for thinking that there was no collusion between the Jews and Samaritans? Their rooted enmity towards each other precludes at once such a supposition as that they would agree in any alteration. t Who were the Samaritans? The descendants of the ten tribes that seceded in the reign of Rehoboam, and of the Cutheans, a colony brought from the East, and established in Samaria, by Esarhaddon. They professed the Hebrew religion, but received only the Pentateuch. Whence sprung the enmity between them and the Jews? From the Jews refusing to permit the Samaritans to assist in rebuilding the temple, who, in consequence of the refusal on Ihe part of the Jews, did all in their power to impede the work.
