That the time, in which the Redemption of mankind received its completion in the person of our blessed Saviour, teas precisely that which was most evidently calculated to produce ifs intended effect.' Dr. Marshall, in an excellent Sermon on Gal. iv. 4, remarks, "that if our Saviour had been sent among us long before, or long after, the days of Augustus Cwsar, one of these two inconveniences must have ensued upon his earlier or later appearance, viz. that the earlier would have left us no sufficient conviction, that we could not have found the true God without him; since, after so much experience of our own weakness and disability, we are scarce even now prevailed with to acknowledge the necessity of a Divine Revelation for teaching us the will of God. On the other hand, a later appearance would not have found mankind in so good a preparation to discuss the credentials of our Saviour's commission, nor to examine the truth and authority of his powers: had it been delayed for five hundred years longer, by that time we know there was a relapse into the old state of blindness; and the charge of imposture would have sounded more plausible, when so few were judges, or knew how to distinguish a counterfeit from a just pretension.' Mr. Rotheram, also, in the Tract above quoted, observes, "Providence co-operating with natural causes, in determining the time of our Saviour's coming, would have a regard to that season, when the circumstances and disposition of mankind were such as might make way for it's speedy propagation and establishment.
