In those days there were neither two-year-olds nor handicap races; the King's Plate, with a few fifty pounds plates, and an occasional match, were the complement of the two days' sport. But as there were heats for all three Plates, and oftentimes purposely prolonged, the light on some occasions hardly sufficed for the judge clearly to decide the last heat. This was the case in the memorable contests of four heats for the Royal Plate--of four miles each--between the Earl of Lonsdale's Grey Marquis, and Dr. Willis' Haphazard colt. The winner, Grey Marquis, was admirably ridden by his noble owner, who was noted for being at everything in the ring; he was Post Master General under Lord Liverpool's Government, hunted his own pack of fox hounds, kept a stud of race horses--which never were more artistically jockied than when the noble master was up--and in the fashionable world he was "Nulli secundus" to any of his fast contemporaries. Betting at that era at provincial meetings in the south was of small amount, merely taking the odds to a fiver or tenner, and there was no ring. A prominent character then as a bookmaker was Ben Ockenden, who resided at Abingdon and attended all the races in the West of England--always walking from one race town to another, and on a hot summer's day, with his great coat on his arm and his umbrella in his hand. He also was the owner of some race horses, of which Triumph was the best. Formerly there was no paid or regular judge or starter, consequently too often there were palpable mistakes in both departments. Not the least conspicuous of these errors was one at Winchester, when a gentleman of high standing was officiating in the judge's box, and ...
