Excerpt: ... allow sufficient latitude to cover such variations in castings as are likely to be encountered. The outer block should Fig. 23.--Form for Making Field Spools. be planed to a uniform thickness of If in., for upon this dimension depends the parallelism of the flanges. A piece of sheet tin about 19 in. long and 2f in. wide is to be bent tightly around the inner block, the ends lapped and soldered; then clamp on the halves of the outer block, letting the edges of the tin protrude equally on both sides; slip on the flanges and with a peining hammer bend the tin over onto the castings. These edges may or may not be soldered, just as the builder prefers. Make sure that the completed spools will slip easily over the pole-pieces of the field magnet; mark the location of the screw holes; drill and tap for No. 14-20 flat-head iron screws, in. long. It will be observed that in the design of the spools, offsets are provided in two of the flanges, through which suitable leads to the beginning of the winding may be led, so as not to interfere with the orderly arrangement of the successive layers, and to prevent undue closeness of wires, between which considerable difference of potential may exist. 7. Terminal Connections Arrangements for making suitable connections between the windings of the machine and the external circuit can be left somewhat to the discretion of the builder. It is now customary to make these parts rather simple, the switchboard being regarded as the proper place for all except the barest fittings. In Fig. 24 will be seen assemblages and details of convenient and sufficient devices. Two blocks, fitted as shown in "A," one for each side of machine, for the armature and line terminals, and one like "B" for the top of machine, for field coils and rheos...
