This essay was written during the summer of 1891, while I was a student in the University of Berlin, and presented to tl1e Faculty of Cornell LY11l âI Slt as a thesis for the doetorate in the spring of 1892. At that time I hoped to be able to return to the subject and make what I had done the basis for a more extensive investigation. The press of other engagements and duties has, however, prevented me from carrying out this plan, and the essay is now published in the form in which it was first written. I have added one or two foot-notes while reading the proofs, but made no other alterations, though if I were writing today I should doubtless lay different emphasis upcn certain points. My interest in the subject of the Will was due mainly to the psychological writings of Wundt, James, and Miinsterberg, and my treatment owes much to each of these writers. My other obligations I have tried to acknowledge in full throughout the essay itself. J. I i. C.
