But gotrabhû may also mean simply a priest or monk, as appears from the following words of Buddha, bhavissanti kho pan' Ànanda andgatam addhdnam gotrabhuno kdsdvakanthd dussild pdpadhammd, "the day will come when priests who wear the yellow robe shall be vicious and sinners." Here gotra is said to mean çramanagotra, the family or fraternity of Buddhist monks. Hardy says, "The wisdom necessary for the reception of the paths is called gotrabháíiána" (E. Mon. 281, 282). Ab. 208; I am not sure of the meaning, for the explanation is yúpo hatthakumbhamhi patitthito. HATTHINl, see Hatthl.
