We must recognize and understand the worth and worthlessness of money in a world where money is the symbol of power. But in the deluge of Thrift teaching today, look out. There is far more false Thrift than true Thrift being taught, and that is what is bringing the word under reproach. False Thrift makes misers and robs us of the very Paradise it promises. What is true Thrift? The abolition of waste. What is waste? Anything that wastes our life. Anything that makes us cheaper, grosser, meaner. There is a fairy city hard by my home. They call it Packingtown, but I call it Thrift Wonderland. Sometimes down-town or out in the suburbs you smell a strong, gluey odor. "That's from Packingtown," they say. But when you get to Thrift Wonderland you don't notice it, for it is so slight. Like scandal, the farther it travels, the worse it smells. When they perfect a process to utilize the squeal and the smell, the wonder will be complete. There are thousands and thousands of fairies over in Thrift Wonderland, who make the wonders.
