Hardly had the first lock been shorn when Mr. Snobsey's voice sounded from within the adjoining room, "Jim! stop work on that gentleman, and send him in here." It was very seldom that Mr. Snobsey spoke of a convict as a "gentleman," and even to Gilbert it had a peculiar sound. Getting up from his chair, he went into the office to see what was wanted. He found Mr. Snobsey leaning over his desk, very busily engaged in copying in a large book a document which he held in his left hand. "I have a joyful piece of news for you, Mr. Howard." Mister Howard! How wonderfully polite Mr. Snobsey had grown within an hour. "A joyful piece of news for me?" repeated Gilbert. "Yes, sir," said Mr. Snobsey. "A most happy surprise." Gilbert's curiosity was now at its hight, and Mr. Snobsey seeing this delayed as long as possible telling what he had to say. "What is it, sir?" he asked. Mr. Snobsey grinned. "What is it, sir?" he repeated. "'Just this," said Mr. Snobsey, after a moment's hesitation, and looking up; "you are free again!" Gilbert's face, for a second, turned as white as this page. "What do you mean?" he gasped. "Just what I say," returned Mr. Snobsey; "you are free again."
