The next eminent prophet that spoke plainly of Christ, was David, in his book of Psalms; where, in the most expressive manner, he describes his incarnation, his sufferings, his exaltation, and his various offices of prophet, priest, and king, as we have seen above. We are now to consider the writings of those who in a special manner are distinguished by the name of prophets, because they had a clearer knowledge of futurity, and at the same time that they spoke of things present, or shortly to come to pass, had chiefly in view what related to the Messiah and his church, in aftertimes. A. M. 3219. B C. 785. Isalas was of the tribe of Juda, and it is supposed that he was descended from a branch of the royal family. He was the earliest of the four great prophets, and according to Dr Tomline, entered upon his prophetic office in the last year of Oziah's reign, about 758 years before Christ. It is uncertain how long he continued to prophesy; probably more than 61 years. It is the constant tradition both of the Jews and Christians, says Calmet, that Isaiah was put to death with a saw, in the beginning of the reign of Manasses, king of Juda. The scripture mentions two sons of Isaiah, one called Shear-Jashub, the remainder shall return, the other Hash-Baz, hasten to the slaughter. The first name shewed, that the captives who should be carried to Babylon, would return from thence, after a certain time; « S»e Lancelot's Chronological Tables, at the end of Vitre's Fo. Ed.' of the Bible. and the second name implied, that the kingdoms of Israel and Syria should shortly be ravaged.
