Not illustrated. 1832 Excerpt: ...and so inserted, as to admit of being turned round, to facilitate tbe reading of the inscription on all tbe sides; and this aggregate of staves was called a Peithynen. Allusions to such a method of writing on sticks very frequently occur in the voluminous remains of the poetry of the bards of Wales of all periods; and this is an important evidence of its existence from the most early times. To such evidence may be added another of at least an equally decided character; and which is, that the CoeWren y Beirdd is preserved among many other curious remains, collected under the sanction of several congresses of the bards, convened in the course of the fifteenth, sixteenth, and seventeenth centuries, by the Nevilles, the Herbert!), and other noblemen and gentlemen of South Wales; and the last of these congresses was held in the year 1681, at Bcwpyr Castle, in the county of Glamorgan, wherein all the prior collections were blended into one, examined, and sanctioned by the procuration of Sir Richard Bassett.f For the more complete verification of the genuineness of the bardic alphabet, a third important proof to be referred to is, tbe inscriptions on ancient stone monuments. Amongst those preserved in Camden's Britannia, several may be seen, having the Bardic characters occasionally intermixed with those that are generally Roman: such are tbe / in legion, the s in filius and ejus; also the jf, p,f, and the f.J The invention of the Bardic Alphabet was particularly convenient and useful in a pastoral state of society, such as the Historical Triads describe to bave been that of the Cymmry;§ and, as the only necessary tool was a knife for preparing the sticks, and for cutting letters thereon, such an invention might have been, and probably was, of universal usage...
