Thus the infamous Bernard Fournier when once he had refolved to be guilty of the forgery of the note, was obliged to have recourfe to his invention 10 piece together a tale that might explain the bifhop's motives in giving it; but in framing of this tale, he hath run into fuch abfurdities, and aflerted fuch falfhoods, as have ruined that caufe which they were meant to ferve. One of Fourniej-'s ( 76 ) jFear»zVr'/fi£Uons well deferves to be mentioned here as it bears the ftrongeft refemblance to B--r's. From the depofuion of his patron, Mr. Cbevaliter, it appears that Feurnier's tale runs thus, that whilft he wa curate in Jerfey he was int rruptcd and ditturbcd by the rude and indecent behaviour ot a young Woman, whilft he was performing divine lervicc in the Church, for which he libeled her in the Dean's Court, and not feeing fatisficd with rhe fentence there pronounced, rfe! appeal' d therefrom to the Bifhop ot 1Vmchefter conjiftorial court, for redrefs, and having met with gr at delays there he perionally applied to the B (hop himfelf and exprefled to him his diffati--faction at the delays he met with in bis Court, and that if he was not redrefled, he would complain to thr Arch Bifhop himfelf (b)' And yet, nothing can be more certain, than that Fountier did not appeal to any confiftorial court of the Bifhop of Winchejler; for his lordmip afTures us that.hebas ho con/ijtorial court, to which any caufefrom the court in 'Jerfey, can pqffibly be brought, 'or ever was brougbt-(c.
