To it Samuel regularly resorted for the administration of justice and the offering of sacrifices (1 Sam. vii. 16). Not a vestige of the place now remains, so that its site cannot be identified. Ai is perhaps to be identified with the present heap Tell elHajar, about two miles south of Bethel. The city was destroyed by Joshua (Josh, viii.), but was rebuilt in later times, and existed upon the return from the Capitivity (see Ezr. ii. 28). This is the place called Hai in Gen. xii. 8, xiii. 3. Aiath (Is. x. 28) and Aija (Neh. xi. 31) are probably only variations of the same name. Chephirah is perhaps identical with the modern Kefir, about two miles to the west of Yalo, i. e. Aijalon (see p. 77). Like Beeroth and Kirjath-jearim, it was re-occupied by the Benjaminites after the return from the Captivity (Ezr. ii. 25). The site of the ancient Beeroth is probably to be found at el-Bireh, a little to the south-west of Bethel, and about ten miles north of Jerusalem, on the great highway leading northwards to Nablous. At it, close upon the road, is a copious spring, which is the customary resting-place of caravans going northward from Jerusalem at the end of the first day's journey. According to tradition, this was the spot where Joseph and the Virgin Mary discovered that the child Jesus was not with them (Luke ii. 43-45). Aphek. A place at which the Philistines pitehed before the battle in which the sons of Eli perished and the ark of God was taken ( 1 Sam. iv. 1, n). It may have been at the same spot that the Philistines encamped when on their way to fight with Saul at Gilboa (1 Sam. xxix. 1). No clue has been obtained as to its site.
