If the testimony of antiquity is important and authoritative, let the well-attested convictions of good men, who lived at the very head of the stream, as it issued from the Apostles of Christ, teach us "on whom the ends of the world are come," that an insight into the Scriptures is to be acquired by prayer that the 'door of light may be opened' to us; for that the 'perception' of their true sense is ' given to none but to them to whom God and Christ grant to understand them.' Now, if we candidly listen to the authority of antiquity, we shall be found 'earnestly contending for the' same principle. For if it was a true principle then, it is such now, and always, and must be confessed and upheld by Christians of this and of every generation. In the degree, too, in which the spirit that ' exalts above measure,' Reason, as a judge, may depreciate or deny such a rule as this, and refuse, as unphilosophical, to try the inspiration of the Scriptures by the light of the Holy Spirit, on the plea that this doctrine is a part of the system which is upon trial, and, there fore, that such a proceeding would involve the error of a 'petitio principii;' just in that degree to be held in honour are those 1 Writers who have the courage to maintain the obnoxious principle, when they feel that it is not a circumstance merely, nor an appendage, but forms an organic truth of the Gospel 'wherein they stand.' 1 See Rev.
