Haldemann ("Pennsylvania Dutch," 1872, p. 58) gives "chipmunk, a groundsquirrel (Tamias): chip, probably from its cry, and Swiss munk, a marmot." Rev. VV. M. Beauchamp tells us (" Journal of Amer. Folk-Lore," Vol. ii, 1889, p. 160) that the Delaware Indians of Pennsylvania called "January the squirrel month, or the time when chipmucks came out of their holes."
