Excerpt from Eight Lectures on Theoretical Physics
At the request of the Adams Fund Advisory Committee, and with the consent of the author, the following translation of Pro fessor Planck's Columbia Lectures was undertaken. It is hoped that the translation will be of service to many Of those inter ested in the development of theoretical physics who, in spite of the inevitable loss, prefer a translated text in English to an original text in German. Since the time Of the publication of the original text, some of the subjects treated, particularly that Of heat radiation, have received much attention, with the result that some of the points of view taken at that time have under gone considerable modifications. The author considers it de sirable, however, to have the translation conform to the original text, since the nature and extent of these modifications can best be appreciated by reference to the recent literature relat ing to the matters in question.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the intricate world of theoretical physics at the dawn of the 20th century, offering a captivating exploration of the fundamental laws governing the universe as understood at that time. Through a series of meticulously crafted lectures, the author embarks on a journey through key concepts, including the principles of thermodynamics, the atomic theory of matter, and the revolutionary ideas surrounding heat radiation and electrodynamics. The author masterfully situates these scientific inquiries within the broader historical context of physics' evolution, tracing the shift from anthropocentric views to a more objective understanding of natural phenomena. This exploration extends to probing the distinction between reversible and irreversible processes, ultimately leading to profound insights into the nature of entropy and the unidirectional flow of time. Delving deeper, the book examines the application of thermodynamic principles to diverse areas such as dilute solutions and electrolytic dissociation. The author's lucid explanations and insightful analyses illuminate the interconnectedness of mechanics and electrodynamics, hinting at a future where these seemingly disparate branches of physics may converge. In essence, this book provides a window into a pivotal era in the history of physics, offering enduring insights into the quest for a unified understanding of the physical world and the profound implications of scientific progress for our comprehension of the cosmos and our place within it. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. Codice articolo 9781330066188_0
