Sinossi

Excerpt from Imagination in Landscape Painting

Landscape-painters, like other men, may be endowed with the imaginative faculties in the most various degrees and in quite different orders. We shall have to discriminate between some, at least, of these in the course of the fol lowing chapters. For the present we must content ourselves with the simple assertion, to be maintained subsequently by proofs, that there is nothing peculiar in the imagination of a landscape-painter, except this, that it is occu pied with objects and phenomena that interest him more peculiarly than others. Not that other people are necessarily without interest in these objects and phenomena, for if they were so, the productions of the landscape-painter would have no sale, and he could never win reputation. Thousands of passages in litera ture give evidence of a landscape-painter's tastes, and many seem to prove that the writer possessed exactly the kind of imagination which we are in the habit of attributing to painters. There is abundant evidence, too, of the presence of taste and imagination exercised with reference to landscape, in people who have no artistic training Whatever, and who do not express themselves in literature. We know this by their evident delight in romantic natural.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating realm of the landscape painter's imagination, exploring how it differs from and intersects with other forms of imaginative expression. The author contends that the landscape painter's imagination is unique in its focus on the visible world and the interplay of light and color, revealing hidden connections between the external landscape and human emotions. Drawing upon examples from literature, art history, and popular culture, the author investigates the varying degrees and types of imaginative faculties present in landscape painters. The book examines the role of memory in artistic creation, emphasizing the importance of cultivating a vivid and accurate visual memory. The author delves into the potential dangers of an overly active imagination, exploring the fine line between creative vision and hallucination. Through insightful analysis and engaging prose, the book sheds light on the complex relationship between artistic imagination, observation, and scientific knowledge. It challenges the notion that artistic genius is solely a product of innate talent, highlighting the crucial role of acquired knowledge and dedicated practice in shaping the landscape painter's vision. Ultimately, this book offers a profound exploration of the landscape painter's unique way of seeing and interpreting the world, revealing the power of imagination to bridge the gap between the external and the internal, nature and human experience.
