Excerpt from Multilinear Functions of Direction: And Their Uses in Differential Geometry

The theory of multilinear functions does not merely coordinate. It affords simple proofs of the relations between the cubic functions of Laguerre and Barboux and of formulae 7851, 7352) for the twist of a family of surfaces, and it leads naturally to expressions (7241) for the rates of change of the two principal curvatures of a variable member of a family of surfaces at the current point of an orthogonal trajectory of the family, expres sions that are interesting because their existence was deduced by Forsyth in 1903 from an enumeration of invariants.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book explores a method of mathematical analysis based on the concept of multilinear functions, primarily involving more than one independent direction. The author, a late fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, emphasizes the coordinating power of this theory across differential geometry. The text differentiates between functions of a single direction and those of several independent directions. The latter includes functions of a single direction as limiting cases. Of particular note is the author's analysis of the vectors in differential geometry, providing new insights into the different functions of a single direction on a surface. Originally published in 1921, this book continues to provide a valuable resource for mathematicians and researchers interested in the history and applications of differential geometry. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. Codice articolo 9781330186398_0
