The authors have therefore endeavored, in this volume, after the first preliminary and general ideas have been considered, to introduce the student to the current organization and business practice of com mercial banks. In so doing, moreover, it has been sought to emphasize less the internal organization of the bank itself than its business aspect as viewed from the outside. Particular attention has been given to the financing of the individual enterprise, the prob lems which must be met by the business man, in whatever occupation engaged, in connection with the transaction of the banking side of his operations. A succeeding section of the book has for reasons of convenience been devoted largely to a descriptive out line of banking in various aspects, an understanding of which seems necessary to full comprehension of present banking problems and conditions, although, strictly speaking, they would not find a place in a treatise upon banking in the commercial or narrower sense of the term. These phases of the discussion having been completed, the way is paved for a relatively brief outline statement of the relation of the bank to the monetary system and Of its function in the develop ment of prices.
