Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of African Languages
AS a rule, no long explanation is needed to make clear why a scientific traveller, an official, a business man, or a missionary should seek to acquire the languages of primitive peoples in our colonies over seas. All the world over, the first requisite for any one who has to deal with men is ability to communi cate with them. When, therefore, a primitive people understands no European language the only course open to the European desirous of opening up intercourse with it is to learn its language. Later on I intend to discuss the practical import ance attaching to the acquisition of primitive languages in some detail, because it is not even yet adequately recognised. But, in the first place, I have to deal with another question, the answer to which is not so immediately obvious: Why.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book is an introduction to the study of African languages and language families as a whole, drawing from examples of various languages such as Egyptian, Semitic, and Bushmen to make its points. The author starts from the perspective that non-European language systems are a worthy and important field of study for linguists and philologists, despite the negative characterizations they often receive. He talks about the process of linguistic standardization through the use of written works and analysis of documents, looking especially at the evolution of the Bantu family of languages that dominate much of sub-Saharan Africa. This book includes information about the different systems of grammar and phonetics that exist in African languages, especially the use of prexes, and the intersections between African and Arabic languages. Overall, the book provides a foundational study of the continent's linguistic backdrop in a historical and contemporary context.
