Excerpt from The Philebus of Plato: Translated, With Brief Explanatory Notes
The celebrated but difficult Platonic treatise on Pleasure, or rather, on the Chief Good, has often been translated. A careful, though not always correct, version in two Vols. Quarto, encumbered, rather than illustrated, by diffuse notes, by Floyer Sydenham, was published in 1779 - 80, and again by Thos. Taylor in That by Mr. Poste (8vo., London, 1860) is more generally known; it is only a translation, and by no means a very literal one, with a brief but lucid analysis of the argument. Mr. Grote, in his Plato, and more recently Professor Jowett, have also translated (the former in part, the latter entirely) the Philebus, and both have commented at length on the philosophical and metaphysical bearings of the treatise. Both Mr. Poste and Dr. Badham have published the Greek text with Notes and Introductions and Stallbaum's edition is in the hands of most students of Plato.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the timeless philosophical question of what constitutes the "good life." The author engages with Plato's *Philebus*, a challenging dialogue that examines the relationship between pleasure and knowledge in the pursuit of happiness. The book explores a debate between those who believe that pleasure is the ultimate good and those who believe that knowledge and intellect are superior. The author analyzes Plato's complex and often convoluted argument, highlighting his use of dialectic and his exploration of the concepts of unity and multiplicity, measure and limit. This work offers a deep dive into Plato's intricate philosophical system, examining his views on the nature of pleasure, knowledge, and the human condition. Ultimately, the book reveals how Plato, through the lens of the *Philebus*, presents a compelling case for the superiority of intellect and reason in achieving a fulfilling and balanced life.
