Excerpt from Researches on Fungi
These pages contain a contribution to the physiology, mor phology, and physics of reproduction in the Hymenomycetes, and also a record of some observations upon the discharge of spores of 'ascomycetes and of Pilobolus. Naturally many problems have been left unsolved, but I hope that the new data obtained will give an added interest to some of our commonest plants. The delicate adaptations of structure to function, as revealed by a study of the fruit-body of a Mushroom, a Coprinus comatus, or a Polyporus, have provided me with no small cause for wonder ment and delight, and they seem well worthy of the attention of all those who desire to understand more fully the vegetable world by which they are surrounded. The value of the more purely physical work must be left to physicists to decide. How ever, as showing how closely the various branches of science may be knit together, it is not without interest that the first direct i test of Stokes' Law for the fall of microsc0pic spheres in air has been carried out with the help of a lowly Cryptogam.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the intricate mechanisms and fascinating adaptations of spore production, liberation, and dispersal in Hymenomycetes fungi, a group boasting a diverse array of mushrooms and bracket fungi. Expanding our understanding of their intricate biology, the author breaks new ground with meticulous observations and novel experiments, such as using a beam of light to follow the movement of individual spores in real-time. Their findings challenge established notions and reveal the remarkable strategies these fungi have developed to ensure successful reproduction. Moreover, the book explores the interdependence between fruit-body structure and spore dispersal, showcasing how each element has evolved to maximize the chances of spore survival and propagation. By shedding light on the sophisticated reproductive strategies of Hymenomycetes, this book enriches our comprehension of the natural world's intricate interconnectedness and the marvels of fungal life. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
